Well the Magic came up short in the NBA finals and are this year’s bridesmaid. Hopefully next year the team will want it more and understand what it takes to win it all. The only thing I’m worried about is the Magic turning into the San Diego Chargers of the NBA. A tantalizing team with all the pieces but can’t get there due to coaching e.g. Norv Turner = Stan Van Gundy or injuries e.g. LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates and Philip Rivers = Jameer Nelson. If we did this every year like the Chargers do, I’d probably pull for the Miami Heat.
I’d like to run off a few excuses, but the Lakers were just the better team and wanted it more. It was like last year’s Boston Celtics team, they weren’t going to miss their chance. I do think inserting Jameer Nelson into the finals jacked up the chemistry, but I still don’t think it was the reason the Magic lost the series. No one play, player or event makes a series, but what if Courtney Lee made the layup on the inbound pass? What if Dwight Howard doesn’t miss 2 free throws and it’s a 4 point game and Fisher’s 3 point doesn’t matter? I guess you can wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up faster.
Couple things I’d like to see the Magic do in the off-season:
1. Resolve the point gaurd position. If Jameer Nelson is healthy, then trade Rafer Alston. Not hating on Alston, but dude crumbled once Nelson starting taking his minutes and the chemistry went down the drain from there.
2. Dwight Howard needs to do whatever it takes to be a good free throw shooter, period. He cost the Magic 2 games with his horrific shooting. The Lakers wrapped him up like a burrito and forced him to shoot from the line and it worked. Dwight Howard can’t be a liability to his team down the stretch in close games.
3. Last time I checked Ron Artest is a free agent. I’m not sure about his status and what his plans are, but the Magic could use his moxie and toughness. I think he’s crazy, but can play defense and with all the great guards in the east the Magic could use that type of player. Plus they need to get tougher and play with more grit.
Nobody will remember the Magic finished second, but all in all it was a good season and the Magic and their fans should be proud. The Magic beat last years champs when no one gave them a chance. Then they did the impossible and beat everyone’s trendy pick the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Magic made Lebron James throw a tantrum like a 3 year old when it was all over. Then the Magic met Bridezilla and baby was not going to be denied what she thought she had coming to her last year. Bridezilla took it all this year and there wasn’t anything the Magic could do.
Already looking forward to next season. Hoped you enjoyed reading about the Orlando Magic this season. I’ll be gearing up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which should be an intriguing 3-13 season.
